Funeral Hall, Schönaich

The funeral hall in Schönaich is designed as a simple glass cube. The building is a modern contrast to the existing ensemble consisting of the historic sandstone church, the parish hall dating from the 1920s and the cemetery. One of the major ideas behind the design is to allow the atmosphere created by the historic buildings and the park-like cemetery to permeate the funeral hall. The room itself is characterised by the simple and sparing use of natural materials and forms.
The hall shell is designed as a wooden structure; the L-shaped functional rooms attached to the hall are simple, solid buildings.
The load-bearing wooden supports and nogging also serve as a support structure for the facade windows. The wooden slats change the character of incidental light depending on the time of day and atmospheric conditions to create a special impression inside the glass cube.  The glass facade offers different reflections of the area surrounding the hall.
