Academy of Physical Education, Amsterdam

Architects Van den Oever – Zaaijer & Partners have once again left an exceptional calling card in the form of the new academy of physical education in Amsterdam-Osdorp.

The sport complex is completely covered by a green roof. The greenery flows down the two inclined roofs, forming a connection to the surrounding sports fields. The result is a building that blends naturally into the environment. The university of Amsterdam is rightfully proud of this prime example of a greener method of construction. A strong increase in the number of students proves that they, too, appreciate the relaxed atmosphere surrounding the complex. The building, however, soon became too small, and work on an extension to the construction was commenced in mid-2009. The Optigreen partner company involved in the first construction phase also installed 2,000 m2 of green roof on the new construction.

Roof area:

3,750 m² sedum-grass-herb vegetation, of which 1,300 m² is installed on inclines of less than 45°; extended by a further 2,000 m², of which 600 m² is installed on inclines of less than 45°

Green roof build-up:

Level roof areas with the Optigreen System Solution "Economy Roof":
  -    Protective fleece 300
  -    Optigreen Triangle water conduit system
  -    8 cm Optigreen extensive substrate type M-Light
  -     Sedum-grass-herb vegetation
Inclining roof areas with the Optigreen System Solution "Pitched Roof"
  -    Optigreen anti-slip system
  -    3.5 cm Optigreen extensive substrate type E-Light
  -    Vegetation mat with non-degradable plastic insert
  -    Fully automated irrigation

Special features:

The vegetation package on the flat upper roofs is used as a counter-weight to which the anti-slip system on the vegetation roof slopes is attached. Therefore, the anti-slip system is neither supported by the roof eaves nor is it attached directly to the building's steel structure. A fully automated irrigation system supplies the entire roof.
The vegetation on the roof slopes is maintained using a so-called cherry picker.
